Prostate Cancer That Spreads to the Brain

When symptoms of metastatic cancer occur, the type and frequency of symptoms will depend on the size and location of metastases. For example, cancer that spreads to the bones is likely to lead to pain and can cause bone fractures. Cancer that spreads to the brain can lead to various symptoms, including headaches, seizures and uncertainty. Shortness of breath may be a sign of lung involvement.

Prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms until it reaches an advanced stage. Sometimes, the symptoms close to those of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) to develop, including difficulty urinating and a need to urinate urgently or repeatedly. However, these symptoms do not increase until after the cancer develops large enough to compress the urethra and partially block urine flow. After that, the cancer can lead to bloody urine, or sudden inability to urinate.

In many people, the symptoms of prostate cancer develop just after spreading (metastasizing). The areas most commonly affected by cancer has spread to the bones and kidneys. Bone cancer tends to be painful and can worsen the bone enough to easily fracture. Prostate cancer can spread to the brain, which ultimately leads to seizures, confusion, weakness, headaches, or other neurological symptoms. Once the cancer spreads, anemia is common.

If you suspect that prostate cancer has spread to the brain or spinal cord injury, CT scan or MRI of the body is done. Brain tumors can directly damage brain cells, or indirectly, can destroy cells producing inflammation, compressing other parts of the brain as the tumor grows, causing swelling of the brain and causes increased pressure in the skull.

Metastatic brain tumors are classified by relying on the precise location of the tumor in the brain, the type of tissue involved, original location of the tumor, and other factors. Rarely, a tumor can spread to the brain, but the original site or location of the tumor is unknown. This is called cancer of unknown primary (CUP) origin.
